Why Do Rings Discolor Fingers? By gucci.perfumes-mall.com/
You may notice after wearing your rings for a year or two that you have blackening or discoloring of your skin. Most people automatically assume that faulty manufacturing is the cause, or even that you received gold karat less than what you purchased. This is most likely not the case. Discoloration of the skin commonly occurs with white gold rings when your skin comes into contact with the alloys used in the white gold. Most white gold rings are plated with rhodium, or a similar metal in the Platinum family of metals. This provides a bright white color and a layer of hypo-allergenic material in-between your finger and the alloys used in white gold that can cause discoloration. When the rhodium wears thin your skin has direct contact with these alloys and through many causes (perspiration, cosmetics, lotions, etc.), discoloration may occur. This usually takes place after a year or two of wearing your ring, depending on use and conditions. The easy and best solution is to re-plate your ring. This will bring back that bright white color and once again form that barrier between your finger and the alloys that are causing the discoloration. Contact the jeweler from which you purchased your rings, they should be able to re-plate your rings for a nominal fee (+/- $50 is a normal rate).  Deterioration of the rhodium plating is inevitable, although the time frame in which it happens
will vary greatly depending on use and conditions. Moisture and perspiration contribute greatly to the corrosion of the rhodium plating.  We suggest removing your jewelry often and using an absorbent powder on the skin that comes into contact with your rings to prevent this. Another common cause for discoloring of your skin is called 'metallic abrasion' which is when compounds found in cosmetics and creams wear and rub into the metal of your rings. The compounds found in your cosmetics are harder than the jewelry itself and rub off very tiny particles in your rings. This appears as a black dust, and when it comes into contact with your skin or clothing it sticks, forming a black smudge. The easiest prevention is switching cosmetics. Not an option? Try removing your rings while applying cosmetics and lotion, and regularly cleaning the contact areas on your skin.  Can I Prevent Discoloration Completely? The use of platinum jewelry should eliminate it completely, as it does not contain any alloys that white gold jewelry contain. Platinum is hypo-allergenic. Claire is a contributing writer for Eternity Wedding Bands, http://www.eternityweddingbands.com Eternity Wedding Bands specializes in diamond wedding bands and diamond anniversary rings and has been a trusted name in the jewelry industry since 2003.
